Water is essential for life, but it can also carry harmful microorganisms that are invisible to the naked eye. As water passes through rivers, lakes, underground aquifers, pipelines, and storage systems, it can become contaminated with bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and other impurities. Drinking or using untreated water may lead to gastrointestinal illnesses, infections, and other health complications, making proper water filtration essential for every household and industry.
Common Microorganisms Found in Water
Contaminated water may contain bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Salmonella, and Shigella, which are commonly introduced through sewage contamination or animal waste. These bacteria can cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever, and other digestive illnesses.
Water may also carry viruses, including Norovirus, Rotavirus, and Hepatitis A, which are capable of spreading waterborne diseases. In addition, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium can survive in untreated water and cause prolonged gastrointestinal infections due to their protective outer cysts.
Different Water Filtration Methods
Several purification methods are available, each designed to remove specific contaminants.
Boiling is one of the oldest methods of disinfecting water. It effectively destroys most bacteria, viruses, and parasites when water is brought to a rolling boil. However, boiling does not remove dissolved salts, heavy metals, chemicals, or unpleasant tastes and odours.
UV (Ultraviolet) Purification uses UV-C light to deactivate microorganisms by damaging their DNA, preventing them from multiplying. While UV is highly effective against bacteria and viruses, it does not remove sediments, dissolved minerals, or chemical contaminants.
Activated Carbon Filtration is widely used to improve water quality by reducing chlorine, unpleasant odours, bad taste, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and certain organic contaminants. Although activated carbon is not intended to eliminate bacteria and viruses on its own, it is an essential filtration stage and performs exceptionally well when combined with other purification technologies.
Reverse Osmosis (RO) is among the most advanced water purification methods. It forces water through a semi-permeable membrane to remove dissolved salts, heavy metals, microorganisms, and many other contaminants. RO systems are often paired with UV or Ultrafiltration (UF) to provide multiple layers of protection for cleaner, safer drinking water.
